How to Care for Your Suit Between Dry Cleans

A well-made suit is an investment — and like any investment, it rewards careful attention. Whether you wear yours to the office every day or save it for special occasions, knowing how to look after it properly will extend its life and keep it looking sharp for years to come.

At Bordon Dry Cleaners, we see all kinds of suits come through our doors. The ones that last longest — and look the best — are almost always the ones whose owners follow a few simple care habits between professional cleans.

1. Brush Your Suit After Every Wear

This is the single most effective thing you can do. A good clothes brush removes dust, lint, hair and surface debris before it works its way into the fibres. Brush downward along the grain of the fabric, paying particular attention to the collar, lapels and pockets.

A natural bristle brush (horsehair is ideal) is gentle enough for even delicate wools and won't damage the fabric. Keep one on your wardrobe door so it becomes second nature.

2. Let Your Suit Rest

Never wear the same suit two days in a row. Wool — the most common suit fabric — is a natural fibre that needs time to breathe and recover its shape after a day of wear. Giving your suit at least 24 hours between wears allows the fibres to relax and any moisture from perspiration to evaporate.

If you wear suits regularly, aim to rotate between at least three or four. This dramatically reduces wear on any single garment.

3. Store It Properly

How you store your suit matters as much as how you wear it. Always hang your jacket and trousers on a proper suit hanger — one with wide, shaped shoulders that support the jacket's structure. Wire hangers are too narrow and will distort the shoulders over time.

For trousers, use a hanger with a bar or clips and hang them by the waistband. This allows gravity to gently pull out any creases.

Store your suit in a breathable garment bag — not a plastic one. Plastic traps moisture and can cause mildew. A cotton or canvas bag allows air circulation while protecting the fabric from dust and moths.

4. Deal With Spills Immediately

If you spill something on your suit, act quickly — but carefully. Blot (don't rub) the affected area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Rubbing will spread the stain and push it deeper into the fibres.

For most spills, blotting and allowing the suit to dry naturally is the right first step. Then bring it to us at Bordon Dry Cleaners as soon as possible. The sooner we can treat a stain, the better the result.

5. Steam, Don't Iron

Ironing a suit directly can flatten the fibres and create a shiny, worn appearance — particularly on wool. A handheld steamer is a much gentler option. Hold the steamer a few centimetres from the fabric and allow the steam to relax the fibres and release creases.

If you must iron, always use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric, and use a low heat setting.

How Often Should You Dry Clean Your Suit?

This is one of the questions we get asked most often. The answer depends on how frequently you wear it, but as a general guide:

  • Occasional wear (a few times a year): once a year, or when visibly soiled
  • Regular wear (once or twice a week): every three to four months
  • Daily wear: every six to eight weeks

Over-dry-cleaning can actually damage fabric over time, so it's worth following the care habits above to extend the time between professional cleans.

When your suit does need a professional clean, our dry cleaning service in Bordon uses specialist methods to refresh the fabric, remove stains and restore the garment's shape — without damaging the fibres.

Summary

Looking after your suit doesn't require much time or effort — just a few consistent habits. Brush it after every wear, let it rest between uses, store it properly and deal with spills quickly. When it does need a professional clean, you know where to find us.
