How to Clean Your Duvet: A Complete Guide

Most people wash their bed sheets regularly — but the duvet itself is often neglected. Yet your duvet absorbs sweat, dead skin cells and body oils every night, and can harbour dust mites that trigger allergies and asthma.

At Bordon Dry Cleaners, we professionally clean duvets of all sizes and fill types. Here's what you need to know about keeping yours clean and hygienic.

How Often Should You Clean Your Duvet?

The general recommendation is to clean your duvet at least twice a year — once in spring and once in autumn. If you or anyone in your household suffers from allergies, more frequent cleaning (every three months) is advisable.

You should also clean your duvet after any illness, or if it becomes stained or develops an odour.

Can You Wash a Duvet at Home?

Some duvets can be machine washed at home, but there are important limitations:

  • Size: a double or king duvet won't fit properly in most domestic washing machines. Overloading a machine means the duvet won't be cleaned or rinsed properly, and may not dry evenly — leading to mildew and unpleasant smells
  • Fill type: goose down and duck down duvets require specialist care. Machine washing can damage the down clusters and reduce the duvet's warmth and loft
  • Drying: duvets take a very long time to dry thoroughly. If they're not completely dry before use, mildew can develop inside the filling

Why Professional Cleaning Is Better

Professional cleaning gives a more thorough result than home washing for several reasons. Our commercial equipment can handle large duvets properly, ensuring even cleaning and thorough rinsing. We also have the capacity to dry duvets completely and evenly.

For goose down and duck down duvets, specialist cleaning methods preserve the quality of the fill and restore the duvet's loft — the fluffiness that gives it its warmth.

Our bedding and duvet cleaning service covers all sizes from single to king, and all fill types.

What About Duvet Covers and Pillowcases?

Duvet covers and pillowcases should be washed more frequently than the duvet itself — ideally every one to two weeks. We can handle these as part of our laundry service, washing, drying and folding them for you.

Pillows

Pillows should be cleaned at least twice a year — more frequently if you're prone to sweating at night. Like duvets, they can harbour dust mites and allergens. We clean pillows as part of our bedding service.
